I read Christy many moons ago as a teen and I would bet anything that it would hit really differently now! And I’m super excited for the Kristin Kobes Du Mez book!
I had the opposite reaction to the book that Sarah did, but I never read it as a teen and had a non-Evangelical upbringing in the Northeast. Like, I hadn't even heard of anything evangelical or fundamentalist until I went to college. I thought the book was going to be sappy and preachy, but it was not. It was pretty graphic about life back then, the women characters were the leaders, even in a spiritual/religious sense, and the book even touched on emotional and sexual abuse by clergy. I was quite surprised by the book.
I just got an Advanced Readers Copy of the Kristin Kobes Du Mez book, met her, and learned that she lived a few blocks from where I live now in Upstate New York, which surprised me. Very much looking forward to it.
Same here. Although even as a teen I think there was some theology that I was not in agreement of. There was also TV version, probably in the late 90s that was approved TV in my house. I will be interested to see how Kristin places it in the bigger story.

I’m about to start Roots, but for my own personal America250 project, I also grabbed Fearless Women: Feminist Patriots from Abigail Adams to Beyoncé by Elizabeth Cobbs and I am OBSESSED. Cobbs describes in the prologue the structure: “each chapter features two women whose lives reveal important turns on the path to equality. Their stories show that each generation improved society in identifiable ways even while struggling with issues they could not resolve, just as we do.” It’s the kind of book I read a paragraph and have to find someone to talk about it with.
My local bookstore has a "classics" bookclub (in quotes obviously, because what even is a classic?) and we read Gore Vidal's Burr this month - a nod to our 250th, written over fifty years ago, by a gay author (I love my bookstore). Anyway - I thought the book was fantastic - so much shade thrown on usual heros (Washington and Jefferson especially get a lot of that) and it's fun and insightful. Vidal decided after he wrote it to write a whole Narratives of Empire series - there are seven books total - going from 1776 to the early 1950's. I'm planning to read all of them.
I've started the "British Are Coming" audio book based on you saying the author Rick Atkinson is going to be your 250 guest! I'm only 5 hours in to the 26 hours but really like it.
I'm looking forward to reading Land! I don't know if you ever listen to audiobooks, but librarians and booksellers can get free advanced listening copies from Libro.fm.

Christy has such a fond place in my heart. I read it in 4th grade, reread it several times, but haven’t picked it up in over 40 years.

I read Roots earlier this year. It is excellent, but so so brutal. And it's not my first time reading about American slavery.
